    Thank you, Trish Nelson. What a wonderful ten minutes. And thank you, John Bakehouse. Your honesty, insight, and vision bring back great memories. As someone involved with prairie reconstruction for forty years, I still remember the first awe and amazement as diverse colorful life returned to land that had supported corn, beans, and almost nothing else.

    Our current bad farm policies reward continuous chem-intensive industrial corn and bean monocultures, while pretending that just a little tinkering around the edges of that system will give us clean water. It won’t.

    Here is my memory of a quotation that should guide future Iowa farm policies. “Unless we allow the land to produce beauty as well as food, it will, in the end, produce neither.”
