I remember this issue being discussed in the Eighties. I am glad the work is finally finished, but considering the obvious jaw-dropping dumbness of pumping pollution right down into aquifers, it is incredible how long it took to get this done. Also very telling was the initial deep reluctance to even think about using wetland restoration as a solution because that would, horror of horrors, require taking some rowcrop land out of rowcrop production.

Unfortunately, Iowa’s political refusal to require industrial agriculture to stop using Iowa waterways as a giant waste disposal system continues. Thank you to the groups and individuals fighting Iowa’s massive farm pollution, including the Sierra Club.
