Summary:
(1) Mouthpieces for the establishment; (2) Repetition; (3) Context (lack of); (4) Character assassination; (5) Concision (sound bytes only!); (6) False balance (trying to appear balanced, giving equal, undeserved exposure to arguments not backed by facts).
Rule: Facts don’t matter; perception does.
Politicians say whatever the hell they want because they know the media will be obedient stenographers and repeat whatever they say, no matter how obviously incorrect or outrageous (e.g., The false narrative that President Obama wasn’t born in the U.S. The media encouraged endless arguments over this fake issue throughout a large portion of Obama’s presidency, even though the fact of his birth in Hawaii was easily proven false). The rest of us then are forced to waste time and resources attempting to correct the record.
