Update From Congressman Bruce Braley

Here’s an update from congressman Bruce Braley about what he’s been working on lately.

Farm Bill Listening Tour
The Farm Bill is the single most important piece of legislation this year that affects Iowa jobs and the Iowa economy. Congress must pass a new Farm Bill by September 30, and it’s my job to listen to Iowans and get their feedback on what needs to be included in this important bill.

That’s why I’ve begun a series of Farm Bill listening sessions throughout eastern Iowa. From renewable energy to conservation programs, from crop insurance to agricultural research and rural development, the Farm Bill has a huge impact on our state.

Just recently, I visited Grinnell, Independence, Marengo, Marshalltown, Toledo, and Vinton. More stops are planned, and I’ll be sure to let you know when a session is coming near you so that I can listen to your concerns and answer your questions.

Balanced Budget
I’m proud to announce that I’ve recently signed on to bipartisan legislation that would amend the US Constitution to require the federal government to balance its budget so government spending cannot exceed revenue.

It’s a simple concept that would revolutionize the way our government does business. States must balance their budgets; families must balance their checkbooks. And so should the federal government.

This bipartisan balanced budget amendment  will rein in the federal deficit while ensuring America isn’t left vulnerable in a national emergency. It’s the game-changer we need to get our fiscal house in order, protect our economic recovery, and set the stage for future prosperity.

Rebuilding America
Last week, I introduced the the Rebuild America Act with my fellow Populist Caucus co-chair Rep. Rosa DeLauro. This bill works to rebuild the American middle-class by investing to grow jobs and the economy, creating financial stability for working families, and restoring fairness to the tax code.

The Rebuild America Act is the plan we need to strengthen the middle class, grow America’s economy, and invest in the future. This is the kind of bold vision that will put America back on a path to prosperity and progress.

Jobs for Vets
One out of every four veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan is out-of-work. This is simply unacceptable, and I’m pressing Congress to act on new legislation I introduced this month to put unemployed vets back to work.

The Veterans’ Jobs Corps Act seeks to put unemployed veterans back to work using skills they developed in the military – to improve national parks, serve as police officers and firefighters, and work in communities.

Men and women who’ve put their lives on the line for our country deserve every opportunity when they return home. Why not provide them the chance to keep contributing to the nation they love, whether as firefighters, cops, or park rangers? They’ve already rebuilt Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s time to give them the chance to help rebuild America.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at any time .

All the best,
Bruce
