Local papers are chiming in against “Ag Gag” bill
Gag Big Ag
Our favorite comes from the Cedar Rapids Gazette: “We believe throwing a criminal net this broad and potentially damaging to head off a public relations problem is the wrong use of legislative authority. … Lawmakers should not seek to create bubbles of special protection for certain industries, no matter how important or influential.”
The “Ag Gag” bill, drafted for the corporate factory farm lobby, is an attempt by the corporate factory farm industry to criminalize basic watchdog functions that everyday folks have to hold factory farms accountable for their devastating effects.
There has been an amendment offered (S5004) that strikes most of the bill, but we agree with the Gazette, “We urge the Senate to do what it did last year. Shelve the whole idea and move on.”
