Loebsack Calls for Immediate Action to Extend and Expand the Payroll Tax Holiday

Also calls for extension of Medicare reimbursement, Unemployment Insurance

Last week Congressman Dave Loebsack wrote to the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, calling on him to immediately bring up legislation that will address some of the concerns of working families, seniors and those who are seeking, but unable, to find work.  In the letter, Loebsack stressed the importance of extending and expanding the payroll tax cuts.  If this tax cut is allowed to expire, a typical American family making $50,000 a year would see their taxes go up by $1,000.  Loebsack also discussed the need for Congress to extend both Medicare reimbursements and unemployment insurance.

“Unfortunately, the dysfunction and partisan brinkmanship that permeate Washington have made it all but impossible for Congress  to reach agreement on commonsense, substantive proposals to reduce our deficit, get our economy moving again, and create jobs,” Loebsack wrote.  “I look forward to working with [Speaker Boehner] to give a tax cut to working families, ensure our seniors have access to the health care they need, and give struggling Americans the lifeline they need while they continue to struggle through this economic downturn.”

The essential pieces of legislation include:

• Extending and expanding the Payroll Tax holiday to ensure virtually every working American receives a tax cut.

• Extending the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) to ensure millions of seniors do not lose access to their Medicare physicians.

• Extending Unemployment Insurance for those who lost their jobs through no fault of their own.
