Washington, DC August 17, 2011 – Congressman Dave Loebsack today announced that the Iowa Department of Transportation was awarded total of $525,000 to make improvements along the Great River Road in Des Moines and Louisa Counties. This funding was awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Highway Administration through the National Scenic Byways Program. Earlier this year, Loebsack wrote a letter to the DOT in support of these projects.

“The natural beauty along the Mississippi River is a unique destination that can only be found in Iowa,” said Loebsack. “I am pleased this investment will further develop tourism in Southeast Iowa and help promote economic growth in the area.”

Details of the funding are below.

Des Moines County (North of Burlington) – $365,000 for acquiring and preserving a unique 235-acre property in southeast Iowa. The property is deserving of protection because of its potential for wetland and prairie restoration. Over 70 feet of elevation change occurs on this parcel from the tops of the bluffs to the lowland areas that flank Flint River. This one-of-a-kind property could only be found near the Mississippi River and offers close interaction of varied landscapes.

Louisa County (near Grandview) – $160,000 to provide a rest stop for travelers on the Great River Road. A trail, footbridges, and interpretive panels will be constructed at the site of the future Louisa Interpretive Center. This project benefits the byway traveler by offering a place to stop, get out of the car (or off the bike) for a brief walk to learn about the natural resources of Louisa County.
