I just caught the last part of President Obama’s speech where he hammers congress (doesn’t say Republicans but we know who he’s talking about) for not doing their job. Pundits are saying he’s fiery.. (well, he did tell Cantor if they didn’t knock it off he was going to tell the American people the truth about what they’re doing…here’s a liveblog.
“We’re supposed to all be on the same team and if you agree with me you’ve gotta let Congress know.
We can’t ask the people in this room, the middle class to bear the entire burden. We’re not going to balance the budget on the backs of working people in this country. Everybody has to do their part.
That’s fair. We learned it in kindergarden.
It means closing tax loopholes for billionaires before we cut college loans for students..
It means making sure that the biggest corporations pay their fair share in taxes.
That’s just common sense. It should have bipartisan support. These are things we could be doing right now to jump start the economy and get folks working while we get our fiscal house in order.
We can do both. I’m going to keep after every idea and every proposal until everybody who wants a job can find one.
The problem is not that we don’t have answers. The problem is that folks are playing political games.
It’s time to stop ultimatums, to stop drawing lines in the sand.
There’s been a lot of talk in Washington that I should call congress back early. The last thing we need is congress spending more time arguing in DC. They need to spend more time out here listening to you and hearing how fed up you are…
That’s what congress should be doing. Go back home and listen to how frustrated people are with the constant bickering and the unwillingness to compromise even at the expense of our own country.
And if they listen long enough maybe they’ll come back ready to compromise and do what you sent them here to do.
The only way we’ll get the work done is if everybody puts country before party..that’s what I’m fighting to do.
If we can come together, there’s no stopping the United States of America. We will make it through these economic storms and reach calmer water.
Thank you everybody, and God bless the United States of America.”
