Dear Friends, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was
thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you
invited me in.” — Matthew 25:35
Given the Bible's clarity on how believers are supposed to treat
the poor, I'm astounded every time I run into a Christian who's hostile
toward immigrants. Regardless of one's religion or one's thoughts on
immigration policy, how many of us would refuse food, water or shelter
to someone struggling to cross the Sonoran Desert for a chance at a better life?
“No More Deaths”
is a group whose mission is “to end death and suffering on the
U.S./Mexico border through civil initiative: the conviction that people
of conscience must work openly and in community to uphold fundamental
human rights.” My daughter, Fionna, just returned from her second trip
as a volunteer working with “No More Deaths,” and we'll talk with her on Thursday about the experience.
Monday, we kick things off with comedian Lee Camp's take on the Anthony Weiner “scandal.” Check it out here. Then the conversation is wide open. Call and raise an issue you're concerned about, maybe an issue you feel isn't being taken seriously by either policymakers or the press.
Tuesday, Roger Millar with Smart Growth America discusses the upcoming sustainable planning workshop sponsored by 1000 Friends of Iowa
(see EVENTS calendar for details). Also, State Senator Rob Hogg
(D-Cedar Rapids) fills us in on the status of proposed legislation to
give MidAmerican Energy a huge chunk of change to build a new nuclear power plant.
Wednesday, Jake Velie with Healthy for Life talks about the fallout from Germany's worst e-coli outbreak ever. An organic farm
may be to blame in this case. But with other e-coli outbreaks, the
culprit is almost always an industrial operation. Also, State
Representative Dan Kelley (D-Newton) joins us to talk about legislative
efforts to pass a budget and wind-down the 2011 legislative session.
Thursday, Fionna Fallon discusses the work of “No More Deaths” and her recent trips to the U.S./Mexico border.
So tune in Monday-Thursday, 7:00-8:00 pm, at 98.3 WOW-FM and online. You can download the show as a hear it as a podcast, too. Thanks!
