Sarah Palin in Iowa Today, The Des Moines Register, Tom Harkin and Sun Myung Moon

In honor of Sarah Palin's visit to Sioux City today, which we did NOT send a reporter to cover, (we do have our standards) we would like to share with you a letter to the editor that appeared in today's Des Moines Register.

Recently I came across former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's new book, “Going Rogue.” After browsing a copy, I concluded it is the intellectual equivalent of a children's pop-up book without the tactile enjoyment.

Of course, it is likely a prelude to a 2012 presidential run. Chapter titles included such deeply thought-out policy positions as “Drill, Baby, Drill.”

Why would anyone doubt her qualifications after she attended four schools in five years to complete a journalism degree, or her years honing her craft as a sports reporter? Don't forget about the experience she gained as a member of the city council and as mayor of Wasilla, a town roughly the size of Anamosa.

In reality, Palin is not likely a viable candidate. She merely serves as pep-squad leader for the ideologically conservative. She is an uninformed conduit for the message, albeit with a folksy, charismatic personality that resonates with those who choose to ignore the nuances of society's problems.

She is a gift to the Ruppert Murdochs of the world who continually broadcast her every move as a quick ratings grab in their furtherance of the dumbing down of America.

Speaking of the DMReg, “the newspaper Iowa depends on,” what is their justification for taking up a huge chunk of the opinion page today with conjured up indignation against Senator Harkin by –  not a constituent of the good senator, or even a reporter or opponent from the state of Iowa –  but the Washington Times' (ultra-right newspaper owned by Sun Myung Moon) online opinion page editor?

The Register seems to now go by “the newspaper that substitutes 'nontroversy' for news.”

Here is the absurd bone of contention:

“Senator Harkin has showered the state with more than $100 million to build schools – officially dubbed the “Harkin Grants.”

His point is that every time an Iowa school gets remodeled or a new one built, the press releases and the news stories that follow mention “the Harkin Grant.”  He thinks this is unfair.  But wait, there's  more:

“This year, Harkin has dug up another $10 million for the program and another dollop of cash for a separate program called the “Harkin Wellness Grants.”

Obviously, pure, unadulterated self-aggrandizement…
But don't believe us.  Read for yourself and have a good laugh.  It's one of the more hopeful signs I've seen lately of how desperate the GOP is to stay alive and relevant.  Here's the link

Conservatives today have no good ideas and no valid arguments, as clearly illuminated in this example of twisting the fact of our senator doing a great job of bringing money into the state for education and wellness,  and trying to turn it into a negative.  Good luck with that.

To the Des Moines Register we would like to say, this was a strange way to report on the outstanding job Tom Harkin is doing for the state of Iowa.

The good news is that the Washington Times might soon shut down, or at least go online only. It turns out that Moon's daughter is in charge of the US church and is very liberal, even hosted a fundraiser for the Obama campaign.
