To: “'blog2@democracyforiowa.com'” <blog2@democracyforiowa.com>Hi Sam,
I recently discovered your blog and have enjoyed reading the posts. I have
a question for you about the current race for Iowa Governor. I voted for Ed
Fallon and was disappointed that he did not get the nomination. An article in the June 4, 2006 edition of the Omaha World-Herald concerning
the differences between the primary candidates made mention that Chet Culver
opposes civil unions for gay and lesbian citizens and is pro-death penalty.
My partner and I moved away from Nebraska to Iowa primarily because of
Initiative 416, passed in 2000. We have done everything we can to protect
each other, but we worry that further legislation against us could undermine
our efforts.I have emailed Chet's campaign office on 3 separate occasions asking for
clarification of these positions but have received no reply from them. The Republican candidate for governor is one of the worst I have ever seen,
so I will certainly not vote for him. I have heard all the arguments that I
cannot be a one (or two) issue voter. But the civil unions issue affects me
directly. When the one issue has that much of an effect on my life, I feel
I can be a one-issue voter. So what is a progressive-minded citizen supposed to do with this race? Does
Ed Fallon have any plans for a write-in candidacy? Perhaps what I've read
about Chet Culver is inaccurate; if that's true I would like to hear that.Thank you.

I would hope Culver's campaign would, at the very least, respond to their position on GLBT issues. It is something that is very important to me and many of my friends and family.
I, too, will contact Culver's campaign to see if I can get some clarification.

I got this email from Erin Seidler at the IDP this morning. At least this tells us someone is paying attention…

Sam and Guy –
I have forwarded this email to a direct email contact at the Culver campaign, and I will make sure they respond to your email soon. You must remember that we are still in a period of transition, and the IDP and the Culver campaign are reorganizing after the primary and state convention. That does not mean your concerns will go unanswered, I just ask you both to be patient.
