for Iowa is thrilled to announce that one of our own candidates, John Drury, former
mayor of Swaledale and Democratic candidate for Iowa Senate in North
Iowa District 6, has been selected as Iowa's first Dean Dozen
candidate! John is out there, day in and day out, meeting the
people of the sixth district and learning about their concerns.
He is determined that the people of North Iowa will have a voice in the
Iowa Senate.

Where John Drury Stands On The Issues
Education
is an investment in our future and is also a vehicle for economic
development. Our schools must be fully funded in order to maintain the
quality education our children deserve. It also encourages companies to
locate to Iowa. I would be a strong advocate to fully fund education,
but I also believe we should ensure the funding is used wisely to
prevent waste.
A strong economy
translates to having a tax base that allows the legislature to fully
fund quality of life programs, such as education or environmental
protections. Investing in programs such as the Vision Iowa is an
important start to nurturing economic development and growth.
The environment
is a responsibility that we have to future generations. This is a tough
issue, especially in a state that relies so heavily on agriculture.
However, I do not think that one is necessarily in conflict with the
other. I believe that the state can impose reasonable regulations on
agriculture that reigns in corporate abuses, while protecting the small
operators. In fact, I believe that environmentally sound practices in
agriculture can level the playing field for family farmers, allowing
them to compete with huge corporations.

The
very first time I met John Drury, I overheard him explaining to
somebody that this election is about so much more then the individual
candidates, that it is instead about bringing about a fundamental
change in America. He talked about how our country and state were
wasting valuable resources and energy on issues that had nothing to do
with improving people's lives. I guess that's why I have devoted
so much time to working for John's campaign….he understands that the
role of government is to improve people's lives. Gosh, it’s the
same kind of thing that got me so involved in the Dean campaign, too.

How long has Gaskill been in office?

Hi, Kevin! I believe John told me Gaskill is in his second term and was actually appointed to his first term. He had originally served in district 8 and that was redrawn in the middle of his second term and now he lives on the outskirts of district 6.

There is always a time when an incumbent's time is up and this sounds like the time for Gaskill. A candidates 'home town' can make a big difference in a legislative race.
It sounds like John is doing the 'retail' politics that works for rural Iowa.
