2004 Garage Sale Raises Money for PPGI’s Mission

Thanks
to all the volunteers, donors, staff members and shoppers who pitched
in to make the 2004 Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa (PPGI) Spring
Garage Sale such a success. The sale earned over $1300 for PPGI
education and outreach efforts.

PPGI’s Rosenfield Center Thrives on the South Side

PPGI
staff and patients alike are beginning to settle in to the new
Rosenfield Center on Des Moines' south side. Jeff Smart, PPGI security
and facilities manager reports that all is well at the new clinic.
“Security issues are well under control, protestor activity has been
very minimal and patients are pleased with the modern and convenient
location,” said Smart. Rosenfield Center manager Todd Buchacker is
grateful for the generosity that made the new clinic possible.
“It’s great to be able to serve the community with such a beautiful new
facility; it is not often that nonprofit organizations get to do such
great work in such a great place,” Buchacker said.

National Reaction to the Federal Abortion Ban Ruling

The
following is a brief summary of a few of the opinion pieces released
after a San Francisco judge ruled the recent Federal Abortion Ban as
unconstitutional. The summaries appear courtesy of Kaisernetwork.org.

Family Planning Advocates of New York State:
The group in a release “praised” the ruling, saying that without the
decision, the ban “would have been left to the judgment of Attorney
General John Ashcroft, who has repeatedly demonstrated his blatant
disregard for personal privacy and women's reproductive health” (Family
Planning Advocates of New York State release, 6/1).

Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“In their zealous pursuit of this dangerous ban and their attempt to
seize hundreds of confidential medical records, [the Bush]
administration has squandered vast amounts of U.S. tax dollars to
appease anti-choice extremists and fulfill an ideological agenda,” PPFA
President Gloria Feldt said in a release (PPFA release, 6/1).

Republican Majority for Choice:
“It's time for members of Congress to reject the small band of social
reactionaries who” this year have introduced more than 100 pieces of
legislation that would restrict abortion rights and “save the courts
the time and expense of litigating these blatantly unconstitutional
laws,” RMC Executive Director Kellie Rose said in a release (RMC
release, 6/1).

It seems to me that Planned Parenthood has been more Pro-Life than the likes of the National Right To Lifers. Actually we on the progressive side of the political aisle are Pro-Life. We care about the child before it's born and we care about the child after it's born.
