Trump Is President Because Of Our Broken Media

So crazy Trump hired a “Faux-bama” so that he could re-enact some sort of trauma from childhood  (just guessing), where he berates and then fires “Faux-bama.”  I have to admit it made me laugh out loud, in spite of the horror that someone like this is our president. But that is ongoing;  most of us face down this terror every day.  Someone posted a general query on Twitter the other day, “Did you really think Trump would be this bad?”  My answer was “I did. I really did. I’m surprised the White House is still standing to be perfectly honest. I thought all the contents would be looted by now.

So Trump having a psychological need to pretend to fire a faux Obama is darkly hilarious and perfectly in sync with everything we’ve so casually observed about Trump over the years. But that was not the most important piece of information from the CNN article about Cohen’s book about to be released.

Here at BFIA we’ve been ranting “It’s the Media, Stupid” for years, actually for more than a decade.  It’s obvious how and why Trump made his way to the presidency and Cohen articulates it in his book, according to this article. Sure, the Republican enablers climbed on board later after Putin took full advantage of our broken media system and sealed the deal. But Trump’s ascension to the level where it was even possible, was a direct result of our fragmented, shattered, seemingly irreparable, messed up system of information dissemination.

If  we manage to save this election from being grabbed by Trump and his Putin mob cronies, we will have to do something about our media system in order to carry on.  You just can’t have hundreds of millions of people disagreeing on a daily basis on what color the sky is because some saw somewhere on the internet or heard on Fox that the sky is green.

Campaigns refer to earned media, meaning broadcast time that is not a paid advertisement. You hold a rally or event and the media covers it as news. In Trump’s case, everything he says and does is considered news by the broadcast media and cable news.  This was true before he became president. The amount of free media he received has been estimated to be in the billions.  And that is why he is president.

“Donald Trump’s presidency is a product of the free press,” he writes. “Not free as in freedom of expression, I mean free as unpaid for. Rallies broadcast live, tweets, press conferences, idiotic interviews, 24-7 wall-to-wall coverage, all without spending a penny. The free press gave America Trump.

“Right, left, moderate, tabloid, broadsheet, television, radio, Internet, Facebook — that is who elected Trump and might well elect him again.”

  1. C.A. says:

Another point of view from a Georgetown professor, from the day after Trump got elected — “Last night we saw something historic: the dance of the dunces. Never have educated voters so uniformly rejected a candidate. But never before have the lesser-educated so uniformly supported a candidate.”

In a country where so many people are willing to believe the sky might actually be green if someone on Facebook says so, nothing and no one is really safe.
