Iowa Republicans know there will be mass confusion among the electorate about why it is happening and whose fault it is, presuming most voters even find out about it. Iowa Republicans know their backs are covered by the Iowa right-wing media that has conned its listenership into believing that the mainstream media, such as the Des Moines Register or Iowa Public Radio, or any newspaper, is lying, liberal fake news. Republicans know their supporters only believe Fox News and Rush Limbaugh who constantly tell their viewers and listeners that all other media sources are lying except for them.
Republicans know they can do what they want without accountability because our state is saturated in right-wing propaganda. Republicans know many Iowans still believe President Obama is a Muslim who was born in Kenya, not Hawaii. Republicans know voters in western Iowa do not believe that Steve King says the things he says because they believe it is made up by the “fake” liberal media. Republicans know a large percentage of Iowans still think Donald Trump is a man of the people. They know that even those that know Trump is a con, still prefer him to a Democrat or liberal. This is the result of the dominance of right-wing media today. And in Iowa it is a terrible problem.
Republicans know that as long as the numbers show that huge swaths of Iowa are willing to believe absurd lies, they are safe.
Sadly, this still doesn’t answer the question as to why the Reynolds administration would even want to take so little money from Iowans who already have so little. That’s easy. Because the now privatized (thanks to Reynolds and Branstad and the Republican legislature) Medicaid MCOs are certainly going line by line finding things they don’t want to pay for. Governor Kim Reynolds will comply because corporations, ALEC, the Koch Brothers and now Donald Trump are who she (and Branstad) actually work for, and the fact that Reynolds happens to be stationed in Iowa is purely incidental. She and Branstad stopped working for the good of Iowa years ago.
Here is something you can do. Please read this important action alert from Citizens for Community Improvement – CCI.
Gov. Reynolds’ DHS wants to cut Medicaid even further by eliminating retroactive Medicaid payments for new enrollees. We can’t let this happen.
Here’s how it works for 40,000 Iowans every year: You don’t have insurance when you get sick or break a leg, you go to the hospital and get treated, then the hospital signs you up for Medicaid. Medicaid retroactively pays for the treatment you received in the previous three months.
Now, Gov. Reynolds wants to eliminate this benefit.
We can’t fix Branstad/Reynolds’ failed privatization scheme by cutting Medicaid further. We need to guarantee quality healthcare to all Iowans, and it starts by denying this heartless cut to Medicaid.
Comment today. Let’s flood the CMS with enough comments they have no choice but to deny this request to end retroactive benefits.
P.S.: Read the Des Moines Register article on the issue here, then take 5 minutes to submit your comment to CMS here. Public comment ends on Tuesday, September 7.
